Monthly Expectations
In addition to the normal parental duties (food, potty, doctor, school, bath, bedtime…), a foster parent is expected to upkeep numerous additional chores:
Create and maintain a life book for each child.
Make sure the child attends each court-mandated visit with their biological family.
Attend each of your child’s court cases, and testify if necessary.
Make sure the child attends all of their scheduled appointments (pediatrician, dentist, OT, PT, speech, therapy…)
Attend each of the child’s PPR and shared parenting meetings.
Upkeep the appropriate level of communication with the child’s parents.
Ensure the child is up to date on their education needs (attendance, homework, tutor, books, pens, book bag, clothes…). If the child is in daycare, ensure they have the daycare version of these items (clean clothes, diapers, wipes, bottles…).
Attend tri-monthly WIC meetings and update the WIC card as necessary before grocery shopping.
Document all medications and doses on a MARS sheet that can be shared with the social worker at the next meeting.
Protect the identity and privacy of each child in your care by redacting their face and name from public posts.
Upkeep 20+ hours of training per year. Training may include online parenting classes, in person DSS events, or reading material.
Check in biweekly with the child’s RN/Healthcare Manager.
Check in monthly with the child’s behavioral health specialist.
Check in monthly with the child’s guardian ad litem.
Check in with the child’s siblings as needed.
Communicate the child’s milestones, needs, and concerns with all parties. Make immediate corrections to any incorrect info related to the child.
