Advocacy Through Storytelling

Think of it as empowerment through storytelling. We believe in the power of stories and their ability to transform lives and communities, so we must continue to amply the voices of patients and foster children. This is the only way to combat two very broken systems: healthcare and foster care.

The U.S. Heathcare System

The U.S. healthcare system infrastructure is overburdened, held together only by an understaffed and underpaid workforce. It’s the only developed country without a universal healthcare system. Even experienced patients such as Colie struggle to navigate Big Pharma. Other countries approach healthcare very differently. Studying their methods and systems may benefit U.S. citizens. Did you know the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as ObamaCare, gives more people access to affordable insurance through its health insurance marketplace? It also expands the Medicaid program, protects those with pre-existing conditions, created the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visit Program (MIECHV), and supports innovative medical care. Issues with antimicrobial resistance (AMR), accessing medication (physically/financially), understaffing, the ongoing effects of COVID-19, and untimely care all play a role in the outcomes of our healthcare practices.

The Foster Care System

The term “foster care” describes a system in which minors are removed from their home by Child Protective Services and temporarily cared for by relatives, non-related extended family, a treatment facility, or licensed foster parents.  A series of social workers from the state or county investigate the alleged claims filed against the child’s caretakers. Then, family court, along with different branches of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), make a series of legal decisions to ensure the child’s long-term safety. Did you know foster children are automatically eligible for Medicaid?
